Scary Wing Chun

Post  Shaun on Thu Nov 13 2008, 18:21

As a wing chun practitioner I have just started to learn chi sau. (for anyone who doesn't do wing chun that’s the rolling arm thing at the start of the video) I know that to do chi sau correctly you have to be very relaxed and sensitive. Also that the whole point of it is not to smash your opponent as hard as you can at any given opportunity.

That’s why I’m not sure what to make of some of this video. If you look at the start, and at various other times, the chi sau is really taken to another level. It’s like full contact sparring. It obviously takes a lot of skill to be able to do this but do you think this is good training? Is this what a wing chun practitioner should aim at being like? My first impression was no but then I think that I’m sure they could soften it up if they wanted. What are your thoughts?

Also, parts of the video I really did enjoy watching are between 5.37 and 7.06
